Text description provided by the architects. Songyang County is well-known for its scenic landscape and over one hundred ancient villages in southwest Zhejiang. There are a considerable number of villages nearby Damushan green tea field, the major tourist attraction in Songyang. A series of public space and facilities are requested in Damushan to as leisure and resting purpose for local villages, tea farmers as well as tourists.
Bamboo pavilion started with a series of pavilions and platforms not only to meet different functional purpose, but also to respect local village context and the ecological environment of the tea fields. Two different square sizes, 6.6m and 5.1m per side, to accommodate a considerable number of different forms of activities. The pitched roofs, angled at 30°, 45° and 60°, responding to the long stretches of the mountain ranges in the distance like a floating village.
The use of locally bamboo as the construction material creates a light structure and is easy for construction. An integrated structure of roof system and wall system is made up of local bamboo with diameters 100mm-120mm. The bamboo beams form a structural triangle system at the four corners of each square units that become a larger system that is stable enough for the roof across each 5.1m and 6.6m platform.
As the top of the roof, the four sloping roof panels comes together to form a skylight. The arrangement of the bamboo columns are predetermined due the structural stress and tension from the pavilion itself, with a gradient of density. The pattern is cohesive with roof system, elongating the vertical lines for the pavilion.
Roof grid system uses 40mm to 50mm diameter of Lei Bamboo which differentiates itself from the structure to respond to the horizontal lines of the tea fields.
The raised platforms with bamboo pavements, undulate upon or below tea tree top, create open or enclosed public area among tea fields.
Total cost for this bamboo pavilion is 150 000 RMB, and the construction period is 8 weeks. This could be a prototype to introduce to Damushan Tea Fields to create new public area and facilities.
